Return to Maradi, Oct 2010

October 31, 2010

Arriving in Maradi on the UN plane. We're here to look at immunisations (tetanus) but I'm also keen to see how the harvest and food situation is bearing up

My Unicef Italy committee colleague, Daniela Fiorentino

Members of the team with a young guest. The women behind are waiting for their tetanus jabs

Pregnant women waiting for their consultation in the village of Sarkin Yama, Mardi, Niger

Discussing Unicef's key family practices with the villagers of Dam Mazadou. These include handwashing and exclusive breastfeeding

Bringing in the millet and arachide (groundnut)

Families are now eating grain from this year’s harvest, which was good to above average in most of Niger. Pockets of food insecurity still exist in zones where rains were insufficient for adequate crop growth, or among families who lost livestock due to flooding, or inadequate pasturage (Unicef Niger)
